*More* insurance bullshit
discordians

So I thought my insurance bullshit was finally settled. I just sent off my affidavit of non-residency via certified mail, and faxed the SC DMV a copy to boot. I'd already had proof of insurance faxed over. I thought I was through.

Then, today, I received three separate letters in the mail today from the SC DMV. All of them said that the proof of insurance they had received "indicated a lapse" in my insurance coverage. Which is utter bullshit - at no time was I without insurance, and I have the documentation to back that up.

I sent them a letter asking them to provide me with the dates for which they show a lapse. I'm waiting for a response, although they have not been very good about personal responses to my letters. Damn it all, though, I shouldn't have to call these people. They provide a mailing address for correspondence. Is it too much to expect them to actually use it for such?

Is it possible the lapse letter was sent before they received the fax and it just crossed? I've had that happen before. Is the letter dated?

Well, the letters mention the insurance documents that they were faxed, and what I faxed today was only the affidavit stating that I was no longer an SC resident. So I don't think this is a case of things crossing in the mail.

Darn. I was hoping. Good Luck.

I'm just taking a guess here, but from a legal perspective, I think you may be better off just sending the letter at this point. That is, whatever they say on a phone call is difficult to prove should the need arise, and for the same reason that they're sending you letters instead of calling, you should be doing the same.

Plus, as you point out, you shouldn't have to waste your time on a phone call.

I'd prefer that, but it's just that I've gotten more done via telephone than I ever have via the mail. I'll give the letter some time, and see where we go from there. Gorram DMV. Gorram bureaucrats.

you are the 3rd person i know that moved and THEN SC hunted post-move

i have the same/a similar gripe.

i don't like doing business over the phone because i just don't HEAR WELL on the phone anymore. so i write lots of "business letters" in response to which, almost invariably, the recipient CALLS ME. argh! if i wanted to talk, that's why i pay for a phone!! if i send a letter, i want a WRITTEN REPLY -- something that many businesses do not want to give, as then they can be held to the fire for what they say -- unlike a verbal conversation which is Jack***t in a court room! (yes, CMA is my mantra.)

I think CMA is a good mantra to have when dealing with the government in any form. I should recite that mantra every time I need to have non-standard dealings with them. *sigh*

To be fair, they're just trying to enforce the law. They're not doing it in a very clear and consistent manner, IMO, but they're trying.

Oh SC is lovely when it comes to the DMV

Um, for one, they have been known to suspend the driver's license of a dead man (yes, this is true, it is a 1st hand account as the dead party in question was my father) for insurance, and oh it gets better, friend of mine had to go to Columbia for insurance issues that were have supposed to have been taken care of (he was in the Navy and did his bit, SC once again hosed it thus...) So when dealing with the SC DMV have the Vaseline, KY jelly and Anal Ease handy cuz you're gonna need it
